It's Winter- an Upsidedown Cat Christmas

Well it has surprised us all, including me, but I guess we're almost done with my Christmas album. I wrote the songs 2 years ago, and some of them last year. I thought we wouldn't have enough time to work on it this year, so I almost gave up on it. In the last week, we have worked hard, late into the evenings sometimes, and I find that the songs are turning out way better than I hoped! I think a lot of that is due to working with my good musical friends, mike and jonathan. They helped me arrange and record Soon Fall Will Be Here and now are helping with this album. I am so grateful!

The songs are different from SFWBH (ha). In fact i think the only casio on it, is a casio drum sample we made. The songs are played on the Mason & Hamlin piano mike bought 2 years ago. Also some Rhodes, Moog Opus and some more acapella based tracks.

They are also a different subject matter, more about this later, but it's Christmas songs, but I wrote them (not the traditional Christmas songs you may have grown up with). There's also a thanksgiving song, and some that are just about wintertime. I also found it fitting to include 3 songs that i have shared with my church over the last 4 or so years: Read my Heart, Sing into the Darkness, and Work of your Hands, which has guest appearences by Team Fadel! (It's sooooo gooood!)

and now down to business:
we're going to try to finish it by monday??
and get it online for free download (probably on NoiseTrade).
There will also be limited real CD copies. I made perhaps 80 cat prints that will be made into paper covers. They are screenprinted on red paper, but now that I don't have access to a printing studio, i guess my hand painted stencils seem less than perfect, but I'm still pleased with them over all!
Those who get the download will have access to an image of the cover, and the track info.

so... let me know if you want a real copy, or look out for the download.
I think it's 8 of my songs, and I'm not sure yet if Mike will put a Hallowed Sails song on it. We'll see!!!! hoooooray!

holidays

Hello.
so it's been a while since writing. christmas was good. i was very thankful for my new apples to apples game! it provided fun hours with family and friends, and i'm sure it will continue to do that.

currently working on a quilt, and will fix a knitted blanket soon, and make another rag rug. so i'm excited about all that, and my album is pretty much done, and so we're trying to figure out details about mastering and i need to work more on the art!!

some things have been stressful, but it's been really really nice to have time off and be able to focus on some things, and also take some time off and read or sit around.

i'm continuing my battle against all the junk in my room. and hopeing to get to sew stuff soon as i have a lot of mending and projects i want to do.

and....exciting news, i'm the proud owner of a tascam 4track recorder. (it looks like this) so i'm excited to use that soon, and listen to old tapes i did a few years ago and see what is on there.

yeah, so i have a bunch of pictures to scan and am still hoping to get a digital camera sometime...but first i have to pay for my cd and things like that.

Yep!!! well merry christmas and i'll write more soon!

singing songs...

there's still a lot to do for my cd. hopefully we'll be done tracking by august 18th (our 1 year mark, i think) and then mixing, mastering, cd covers (i need to figure out those details still) and yeah...playing shows?
today is one of the first days i recorded something new in a long time. just some vocals, an idea i was thinking about...but i'm out of practice, so i may as well just start taking some audio notes..like melody and lyric ideas. so we'll see what happens.

on sunday we had a musical saw player into the studio and that was fun, and so that should be on two songs. and so mainly we're recording all the left over details.

yay. and i'm working on a pants quilt for my sister.. it's huge, 288 squares or so, so i have a lot to do... i'm using the machine my dad got for me at a garage sale and it's different from our singer, so i feel like i still don't quite have it down, but i'll get there. it's called "new home" so that's pretty cute.

i'm also excited about a rag rug i'm working on. my first braided rug. and i also finished up some socks it took me forever to knit, and i got yarn to make a felted bag because i need a smaller bag than my messenger bag but one i can carry some books in or knitting or my new shiney red water bottle!

i'm hoping to also start sewing more clothes soon. sigh there's just not enough time in the day. i'm thankful to work in the mornings because then i'm up early and when i get home i feel i have to make use of my time, but it doesn't always happen. and i write lists and forget about them and things.

ps: i know i'm Super Late with my 3 on the 4th comics...sigh. i guess i kind of forgot. but maybe i can get to that tomorrow!!! yay!

zine sine wave

yay for zines. (and giant library cards)
it was fun, and overwhelming in a good way. i barely had money to spend, but i got some free zines, two compilations, a zine about the beach boys and a bobby dylan paper doll for abbi. yay. i'm already excited for next year.

sad news: my watchband finally broke... so i'm thinking of what to do. i've had this watch for sooo long, like 5 years? and it was its second band and so i kind of feel like maybe i should just buy a new watch, cuz it's certainly had a good life, and is all beat up looking.

exciting news: recording is going super well. yay! we added accordion, two guitar parts and a glockenspiel part, so we're almost done with the first song. and lately i've been talking to the few songwriters i know and getting advice and just having conversations about arrangements. it's been really helpful and interesting, cuz i don't know what i'm doing, and it's good to hear lots of opinions and ideas from different people. and yeah, it's been soo fun to record. i'm so thankful it's happening.

today i listened to mixes and worked on getting 3 casio shrinky dink wristbands ready for future selling. i knit 2 today, and had one that i'd knitted earlier, and i sewed the casios on. the PT-80 looks a little sloppy, but the VL-tone and MT-40 look really good. and i'll probably make another MT-45 because i'm keeping the other one cuz i like it.

and i knit more on the baby blanket this weekend, so hopefully i can work on that more. i'm not sure when the baby is due, but maybe soon...

songs

the last two days (and weeks..i guess) i've been trying to sit down and work more on my music. the plan is to hopefully record soon. so i'm trying to get all organized and make decisions about my songs.

so far i have 11 songs that i'm planning on including on my first album.

i've had a lot of these songs for over a year or two, and have never made decisions about certain things. and i have many demos for several songs, so now i'm trying to find all my demos (which are saved in weird places on my computer-so i keep finding things i haven't heard for 6 months or a year) and sift through them and decide what i want for the recordings.

i know that once i'm in the studio, with some extra instruments i don't normally have (and friends helping), experimentation will happen and things will change. i'm excited for that part. but looking through all my songs, i've just felt kind of overwhelmed and like there's so many directions one could go, but i'm not sure what to go with. and since i'm trying to have as clear a picture as possible so i can help explain how i want things it's tricky.

writing songs on a casio with 8 tone options and 8 beat options, and then trying to think about real instruments and all the other possibilities is sort of daunting, in a weird way. like i've rarely thought about drum beats or other instruments like guitar or bass... so i'm trying to figure out a nice balance between casio and the rest of the musical world.

but it's been good to talk to musical friends who've recorded before (and my friends who are going to help in the studio). my songwriting teacher is always helpful, especially at being a 2nd pair of ears for my songs.

it's really exciting because i've had these songs for a long time, and they're important to me, and i know i've done well with my demo recordings for how little i know about recording things. but i'm excited to work with some friends, and learn more about recording.

i love hiss, and have had a lot of it with my Voice of Music microphone from the 50s, but being able to hear things a bit clearer will be nice. like more intended lo-fi would be nice.

i'm really thankful to have a summer off school and work to focus more on music, but at the same time i'm worried about paying for school, and my parents thinking i'm a good kid. haha. so it's a toss up, but for how stressed out i've been the last 4 years, it's been really amazing to let some of that go, and i've been keeping busy.

we haven't started recording, but i can't wait for it to happen. i'm kind of nervous about it, and i'm excited about it.
i never knew 3 years ago that i'd be at this point, or have people who like my songs, or have played 2 shows, or anything. so i'm really thankful it's happened this way and that i have encouraging friends who have helped me get this far.

it will be really nice to have recordings that i'll feel more ready to share with people. like a cd i can actually mail to someone. and i've been wanting to work on some new songs soon, but i feel like i haven't done justice to my first ones yet, and these are all the classic upsidedown cat songs... so i'm really excited about it.

hooray! and i'm really excited about the album art. i can't wait!!! yay!

future last sunday

we did a new session of Future Tomorrow songs. it was pretty fun. they all ended up kind of long and awesome.

"good night ben"

"elbows"

"imaginary friends"

"i don't want to pay my taxes anymore"

"simple situation"

i guess my favorite is "simple situation" but i think all of them are funny. and we did a song for noah, and one for ben. and then ended it with doing a live version of Norway, cuz it was my birthday party.

i'm getting excited about recording eventually this summer. it's a little overwhelming but only cuz there's a lot of options and i'm not good at decisions. but it seems like a really good summer for it, and i'm amazed that i have such awesome friends who want to record me.

why is it soooo hot out... blahhh...

the story of Upsidedown Cat- part deux

let's see...
in the upsidedown cat timeline, which is very hazy because i don't know if any of my songs are "finished" and i'm usually working(or at least thinking) about a couple at a time...the next songs i came up with were "something like that" later know as " orange(you glad)", and with a new set of lyrics it now has evolved into "green sparklers".

i think the orange lyrics are funny, and cool cuz brianne and i once did a power point presentation for french class in high school about orange french things... like traffic cones, and carrots... yeah, the teacher wasn't too impressed, everyone else did cheese and chateaux. oh well, we had fun. (anyone know how to post power points on the web?)

i love "green sparklers" very much. and yeah, my parents really did make a small version of mount hood in my backyard one year out of snow, though i have a feeling the sparklers might have actually been silver, but i'm not sure. it was around new years, and i was pretty young.
i'm realizing this version of the song came a lot later than i thought. with this recording, the order is fine, but i'd record it differently, (same with most of my songs- it seems like once it's recorded, by working through that process, i've gotten a better idea of what i actually want them to sound like. and recordings are always different, cuz if you listen to the ending, all of that is improv'd, cuz i was recording, and didn't know how to end the song, so i just kept singing.)

recordings are all different moments, one way a song could be played. and it's cool cuz at any time i could think of a new way to record the song, and it might work equally as well, or better, so i like that freedom. at the beginning i sort of had a problem with recording stuff on my tiny tape recorder, it was like, i thought if it was recorded, it was a final thing, (so therefore, it had to be done perfectly). but really, recording can be just a way to help you hear what you've got so far, and a version to have around for a while to listen to and think about what you want to change, and what you like about how it presents the song. so i'm glad i've figured that out, and i have soo many tapes of an audio notebook of stuff, where i record melodies or parts of songs, and then can go back to later and think about more.

the next melody i came up with was "doot doot doot" aka "bus 44/soon fall will be here" which i think i'm now calling " no. 44" (as of yet, i think the album will be called "soon fall will be here".) i love this song so much, and i like this recording of it a lot, and this is the song which goes along with my etching i did, and i love how they complement each other, and how personal it is to me. the print is definitely a self portrait, and i guess most of my songs are self-portrait like, to some extent. here's a random recording where i tried out the banjolin with fruity loops. haha. it's generally really hard to get fruity loops to do what i want. it's just so easy to get everything sounding super cheesy. but i have been playing around with it more and learning more about it, and it is sometimes an easy way to get something recorded, like a drum track or something.

i'm realizing how non-chronologically my songs have been written, just because the first ones i wrote were often just a few melody lines, and maybe some chords, and months later we went back and figured out other things, like new parts of songs, new chords, new lyrics, whatever the songs seemed to be calling for. so yeah, over the last year i haven't written too many new songs, we've mainly been trying to get my first songs to places where they could be considered ready to record or play live (which is two different things, sort of) but basically, just figuring out all the details, making decisions (which is a hard thing for me to do), trying to figure out what moods i want the songs to have, etc. sometimes it's felt like i've been stuck on a song, but over all, i have learned a lot from doing it, and i'm getting better at being able to come up with a melody for a new song, and thinking right then of what direction i want the song to go. which is pretty exciting, because i thought maybe that would never happen, and i'd be stuck with a ton of unfinished songs.

oh, and one more thing, for some reason, i'd always thought of music as something you had to grow up doing, so like, if i didn't have piano lessons since i was 6, i would never be good at music. but it's not true, i stumbled into songwriting at 19, and it was really exciting to find i had a new talent that i'd never known i'd had before. i'd taken guitar in my freshman year of high school (or maybe sophmore year?) and it was just for a few months (i was quite afraid to play or sing in front of my teacher) in that time, all i learned was making simple chords on guitar and some basic finger picking, and i had a beatles book, which is funny, cuz honestly, they're not really my top favorites at all, though i do like them, come on, they're the beatles.. but i didn't really understand why chords were the way they are. now that i know more about the piano, guitar makes some more sense to me, but i still don't really know how to play it or anything beyond regular chords and minor chords. my only other music playing was just cuz my grandparents had pianos, and we had my aunt's piano at our house (which she moved two weeks before i asked for lessons- haha), but i couldn't read music, and there was only one book i could sort of follow because it was "play by ear" and had weird charts drawn out of what notes to play. and sometimes i tried to pick out hymns and church songs by ear...cuz i knew them so well.

anyways, to be continued... i hope i'm not boring you all, and stay tuned for part three which will probably be about "read my heart" and "norway."
meow!
